Arthur Powell was born in 1891 (Mildenhall Q4-1891 4A:752) , son of Isaac and Emma POWELL (née ASHMAN). 1901 census...Aged 10, he was at River Bank, West Row, withhis father Isaac POWELL [44] farm labourer; his mother Emma [42]; brothers Samuel Charles [19] and Isaac [15] both farm labourers, Albert [8] and Russell [4]; sisters Belinda [14], Phoebe [12] and Mary [7]. All were born in Mildenhall. 1911 census...Aged 19, he was at Kenny Hill with his parents and brothers Albert and Russell and a boarder, Robert POWELL [49] who seems likely to have been Arthur's uncle.All the men were farm labourers. It seems his father died in 1914, hence his mother was his sole legatee. There was an elder sister Clara who married Ernest PAYNE. Enlisted in Newmarket. Died in Welsh Hospital Netley (South Stoneham Q3-1916 2C:109). His Army service records not having been found, we have no few details of his death. The Bury Free Press on 26th August 1916 recording his funeral stated that he was wounded on 1st July 1916. That was the black day for the British Army on the Somme with around 20,000 killed in one day.
